Dr. Sandstrom completed his M.D. at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA in 1971. He has since received an MBA from the UC, Irvine in 1998 and a MA in the History of Science and Technology at the University of London in 2012. Dr. Sandstrom has been a visiting researcher at the Wellcome Sanger Center for Genomics in Hinxton, UK and a visiting member of Darwin College, Cambridge.
